A flexible English course to prepare you for your degree in the UK

English for University Study will prepare you for successful undergraduate or postgraduate study at a UK university, or for entry to one of the academic preparation courses offered by INTO University of Exeter.

As well as studying the core elements of the English language, you will also develop your knowledge and skills in areas such as academic speaking and listening, academic writing, note-taking, research and project skills, report writing, and presenting.

The course will help you adjust to the demands, challenges and expectations of UK higher education. You will also be able to practise your developing language skills in a vibrant learning environment where you can take advantage of the University's additional learning facilities and mix with a wide variety of British and international students.

What will I study?

This course will enable you to develop your knowledge, ability and confidence in a variety of skills that are essential for undergraduate and postgraduate study.

Through studying a range of modules you will develop a greater command of written and spoken English, as well as the academic study skills that are critical for university study.

As part of the course, you will receive independent advice and guidance to support your university selection and the process of applying to a UK university.

As long as you have met the academic requirements for your chosen degree programme, successful completion of the course offers:

direct entry to an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme at the University of Exeter or another UK university without the need for an external IELTS exam
Assured progression to the International Foundation or International Diploma or Graduate Diploma programme without the need for an external IELTS exam.

How do I qualify?

English requirements:

A minimum of IELTS 3.0 or equivalent.

We can also accept TOEFL IBT and Pearson (PTE). Please contact us for further details.

Age requirement:

17 years or above

Tuition fees include:

20 hours per week of university style learning
tutorial support
welfare guidance
further study counselling
university resources and learning environment
access to the internet and online learning resources

Students must take a minimum of one term. Tuition fees do not include textbooks and other learning materials which are an additional £60 per academic term.

How do I pay?

You can pay by bank transfer or by credit card. Please contact us for bank transfer details.

How long will it take to improve my IELTS score?

On average students are likely to progress at a rate of about 0.5 on the IELTS scale for every 12 weeks of study. So if you only need to improve your IELTS score by 0.5 you need to study this course for one term. If you need to improve by 1.0 IELTS score then take two terms. Please note that these are guidelines only and every student is different.

INTO Residences

All rooms in the residence are modern, fully-furnished and have en suite shower rooms and internet access. The accommodation is self-catered with access to laundry facilities.

Option 1: single studio with en suite shower room and kitchenette
Option 2: shared studio with two bedrooms and shared bathroom and kitchenette
Option 3: superior single bedroom with en suite shower room and shared kitchen for six students

Homestay

INTO University of Exeter has a network of carefully selected homestay families who welcome international students into their homes. You will live as part of the family with your own single study bedroom, sharing breakfasts, evening meals, and other facilities in the home.

How do I apply?

What is the deadline for applications?

We're happy to accept students right up to when our courses begin, as long as there are places available. We recommend you apply as early as possible as courses fill up quickly. Enquire now to check availability.

Step 1: Complete the Application form

Step 2: Submit the Application

The INTO Admissions office will only process complete applications so please ensure you provide all of the following documents with your application:

Copy(ies) of your academic transcripts and certificates from the last three years of study, including:
A copy of your most recent Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate. This test can be one of the following accepted English language tests: IELTS/TOEFL ibt/ Pearson PTE, Cambridge ESOL and must have been taken within the last two years prior to the start date of your intended academic programme. We will need to see the original certificate along with an English translated version school stamp or agent stamp.
For English Language programmes you will just need to provide your SELT certificate
For General English courses you will need to provide a copy of your passport

The INTO Admissions team will assess your complete application and will contact you within two working days with either an answer or an offer.

Step 3: Confirm your place

If you receive a Conditional or Unconditional offer from us, the offer will contain all the details needed for you to confirm your place on the course.

The most common way to confirm your place, will be to:

Sign all forms relating to your course (course acceptance, accommodation, insurance, and under-18 forms)
Pay the tuition and accommodation deposit (along with the insurance fees if you haven't got your own insurance policy
Once you've paid the deposit (and have received proof of your payment from your bank) please send a copy of the payment to us so we can find and allocate your payment to your student record
Attach all the acceptance forms along with proof of payment, to an email and send it to us

Once the payment has cleared, you will be sent a confirmation pack from us, including; The relevant course information to help you with your visa application, course and accommodation confirmation, your updated statement and an invoice which will show any remaining fees still to pay before the start date of your course.

Step 4: Apply for your visa

If you are unsure of which visa type you need you can have a look at our Useful Information page or visit the UK Border Agency website.

Please keep us updated on your visa application process. If for any reason your visa application is delayed or rejected, please contact us as soon as possible.

Please note that INTO employees cannot give you advice on your visa, you will need to speak to your local embassy or the British Council.

Step 5: After you've received your visa

Once you've received your visa and arranged your flight to the UK, please contact us to make sure you have paid the full outstanding balance of your course, at least 4 weeks before you arrive.

You will then receive your final statement along with your pre-departure guide, listing all information you need about your chosen INTO Centre, the partner University and what to do when you arrive in the UK.
