What will I study?

Pre-sessional is a 20-hour a week course that will ensure you improve your language proficiency in core skills. You will learn to give presentations and study independently. These skills are vital to your university success.

Course Outline

This course will develop a range of skills including

  • English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in a university context
  • presentation skills on different areas of cultural and academic interest
  • focus on subject related work in your chosen area including a written project
  • help with independent study using our online materials
  • provide contextual study skills the acclimate you to the culture of a UK university

How do I qualify?

English requirements:

Applicants must provide an official IELTS (or TOEFL) test score. 

5 weeks: IELTS 0.5 overall below the required level and with no subskill more than 0.5 below the required level.

10 weeks: IELTS 1.0 overall below the required level and with no subskill more than 1.0 below the required level.

If any subskills are IELTS 5.0-5.5, the 10 weeks Pre-sessional may be required, depending on proposed degree programme.


The minimum overall IELTS score is 5.5 with no less than IELTS 5.0 in any subskill.

Tracking your progress

Throughout the course, your progress will be assessed to ensure that you are getting the most out of your education, and ensure that you are developing the skills necessary to you success. This will include:

  • ongoing internal assessment and advice on the best way to achieve progress targets
  • essays, summary writing and listening tests
  • guidance from experienced academics on the research skills needed on university courses

Successful entry to a UK university

You will be internally assessed to evaluate whether you have reached the appropriate level for your degree course. Assuming you have met the University's academic entry requirements, successful completion of the Pre-Sessional English course provides the necessary English language and study skills for entry to designated undergraduate or postgraduate courses at the University of Exeter (without the need for an external English language exam). It will mean you have the enhanced level of accuracy and fluency for success at university and beyond.



How do I apply?

Apply online

You can apply online by filling out an application form. This application form is accessible through the green 'Apply now' button. You must include scanned versions of all important documents listed below. On receipt of your application we will make an assessment based on the requirements of the course. We aim to reply within 48 hours, although this is dependent on us receiving all the required information.

The INTO Admissions office will only process complete applications.

Your application package must include:

  • Completed application form, signed by the student applicant or the legal guardian
  • Personal contact details
  • Next of kin details
  • Proposed further study program
  • Latest English language certificate/s

What happens next?

If your application is successful, you will receive:

  • An offer of a place
  • Confirmed course dates
  • Indication of fees that will be payable
  • Acceptance form
  • Copy of the terms and conditions
  • Insurance information and application form
  • 'Under 18 years old' information pack (if applicable)


To reserve your place at INTO University of Exeter you will need to return all application forms mentioned above with £1,000 tuition deposit and £1,000 accommodation deposit. Once received we will issue documents to support the UK student visa process. Full fees will need to be received at least 4 weeks prior to your course start date.
