Is Academic English right for me?

The Academic English program at INTO Marshall University prepares international students for university study in the US. The academically rigorous program provides international students with high-quality English language instruction and the academic skills to succeed at Marshall through development of:

• Listening
• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing
• Standardized test preparation
• Academic study skills

What will I study?

• 6 levels of instruction
• Levels 1 and 2 combine both General English and Academic English students
• 20 hours per week of course work covering the core skills of reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary and grammar
• Choice of electives

Does this program lead to further study?

Academic English students may progress to a Pathway program or direct admission to a Marshall University degree program after achieving the language level required and meeting all other requirements.

How do I qualify?

Progression Requirements:

• To Undergraduate Pathway: Completion of Academic English Level 4 with a minimum C average
• To Undergraduate Accelerated Pathway: Completion of Academic English Level 6 with no grade below B
• To Direct Undergraduate Admission: TOEFL IBT 80 or IELTS 6.0 and Completion of Academic English level 6 with no grade below B
• To Graduate Standard Pathway: Completion of Academic English Level 5 with a minimum B average
• To Graduate Accelerated Pathway: Completion of Academic English level 6 with no grade below B
• To Direct Graduate Admission: Departments generally request a TOEFL score or successful completion of Academic English Level 6 with no grade below B, although individual program entry requirements vary

When can I start?

Note: Students must arrive 1 day prior to the program start date.

Step 1: Complete the Application

Prepare your application package. The application package must include:

• Completed English language programs application form, signed by the student applicant or the legal guardian.
• Copy of passport ID page
• Bank statement or letter of sponsorship that is dated within 3 months of time of application. Must be in English, or certified copies must be provided.

Additional support needed for dependents

If you have a spouse or children that will accompany you to the United States, you must include the following amounts on your bank statement or certified letter:

• $5,000 per year for your spouse
• $2,500 per year for each child

Please note that this estimate for dependents is the minimum additional amount you must show. All amounts must be in $US or show applicable conversion rate and must be in English.

Step 2: Submit the Application

Send the completed application package of scanned PDFs, including supporting documents to:

Only complete bookings will be processed.

Step 3: Gather and Return Documentation

If the booking is successful, you will receive:

• An acceptance letter indicating the program of study requested
• Verification of accommodation requested

To confirm your place you should:

• Send $2,000 tuition deposit (to be applied to balance of fees)
• Send $2,000 accommodation deposit (to be applied to balance of fees)
• Send proof of immunization

Upon receipt of the paid deposit and a signed declaration of finances, you will receive:

• your I-20
• an invoice for the remaining balance due*
• confirmation of accommodation details (if requested)
• an Airport Transfer Form. Please complete and return the form.

*The full cost of the International Student Health Plan will be added to your account unless evidence of an alternative health plan has been approved.

Step 4: Pay Your fees

You should pay the fee balance.

Full fees must be paid four weeks prior to the start of all programs. Any funds in excess of the total amount of student fees, tuition and related costs will be refunded to the remitter and not to the student if different.

Housing will not be guaranteed until full payment is received.

How to pay:

Payment can be made by wire transfer, VISA or Mastercard (a transaction fee will apply to all credit card payments and wire transfers). It is recommended that the payment of all fees be made via wire transfer. Any bank charges incurred will be charged to the applicant's account.

Step 5: Apply for Your Visa

You must also apply for your visa and pay the SEVIS fee balance.

After finishing this intensive program successful students will be able to:

• Interact comfortably in the US classroom with professors and fellow students

• Present their spoken and written ideas accurately and effectively in English
• Write research papers with proper use of citations and references
• Use the Internet and Marshall library databases to conduct academic research
• Read, understand and critically evaluate academic texts
• Understand and use vocabulary common to academic disciplines
• Take useful and accurate notes in academic lectures and presentations
• Develop and deliver oral presentations
